Jason Sims hit the first home run of his varsity career to power Hollister High past Monta Vista 12-8 Monday at the Matadors’ diamond.

The game was part of the Cupertino Lions Tournament for the Balers (14-4), who return to the same place today to face Hillsdale at 3:30 p.m. Today’s game with the Knights was originally scheduled to be played last Saturday, but it was canceled due to rain.

Rain had an effect on Monday’s face-off. The Balers had fine pitching from Kelly Kramer until a downpour affected Kramer’s grip. There was a rain delay of approximately 20 minutes.

The Balers, who had a 10-2 lead at the time, went to Brent Fulgoni as the Matadors made a game out of it.

Sims’ homer was a 400-foot bomb to straight-away center, scoring P.J. Galvan. Galvan nearly cleared the wall, one-hopping it for a double.

Eric Diaz Jr. who is having a fantastic season, went 3-for-3. Nathan Rowe was 2-for-4 for the Balers. Josh Badillo had possible extra bases taken away when the Matadors’ left fielder made a circus catch to rob Badillo.

A win by the Balers today would mean their game against Mitty Wednesday night at 7 p.m. would probably be for first place in the pool and the right to play in Friday’s championship game.
