The Hollister Fire Department responded to the San Benito County Courthouse today when there was a report of smoke in the building, but any concerns quickly dissipated when crews tracked the light haze to vending machines, which they disconnected.

Firefighters responded to the report at 10:28 a.m. and had finished their work by 11:06 a.m., said Fire Chief Fred Cheshire. The smoke and what Cheshire called an “electrical smell” were reported on the second floor, where crews traced it to the vending machines.

“There was no active fire,” Cheshire said.

Cheshire said there was no serious concern at any point of a fire. There was no necessity to evacuate the building.

Firefighters during the incident also closed off a portion of Monterey Street.
