The Anzar girls’ soccer team remained on pace for its key showdown against Pacific Collegiate when it cruised past Marina by a 7-0 score on Thursday in Coastal Athletic League play.
The Hawks are now 7-1 in the CAL, 9-5-1 overall, and will visit Santa Cruz on Monday to take on Pacific Collegiate — a match between the top two teams in the league. The Pumas were 6-1 entering Thursday’s games and were scheduled to square off against Kirby, although no score was reported at press time.
Playing Pacific Collegiate on Monday is only one-third of Anzar’s schedule next week, though. The Hawks will face Trinity Christian on Wednesday, and will then visit defending league champion Gonzales on Friday.
The Spartans supplied Anzar with its only league loss of the season — a 2-1 defeat on Jan. 27.
“It’s gonna be tough, but I know the girls have the determination to pull off what we want to accomplish,” Anzar head coach Carlos Flores said.
On Thursday, the Hawks jumped out to a two-goal lead by halftime when Brianna Miltimore scored in the 17th minute off an assist by Hakima Hossainzadeh, then returned the favor by setting Hossainzadeh for a goal in the 25th minute.
The 2-0 cushion was more than enough offense for Anzar, although the team did tack on five additional goals in the second half.
Miltimore added two more scores to finish with a hat trick, while Myra Quezada and Lauren Bellone each added a pair of assists. Hossainzadah added an assist as well, and Alex Flores, who played keeper in the first half, scored Anzar’s final two goals of the game — in the 65th and 78th minutes.
Monica Medina played goal for the Hawks in the second half.
Winners of two straight games, Anzar will look to make it three in a row on Monday at Pacific Collegiate. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m.
