SANTA CRUZ
For Pacific Collegiate, it was win and you’re in, and the Anzar Hawks gladly played spoiler.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie on Thursday in Santa Cruz, where a 0-0 finish resulted in Gonzales winning the Coastal Athletic League title, as well as earning the lone automatic qualifier toward next week’s Central Coast Section playoffs.
Had Pacific Collegiate pocketed a single score and the victory over Anzar on Thursday, the Pumas — and not Gonzales — would have advanced to the postseason.
“The tie did not help them,” Anzar head coach Carlos Flores said.
The Hawks finish their season with an 11-6 mark, 7-3 in the CAL. Anzar, which went unbeaten in six of its last seven games, finished in third place in the CAL.
“The girls still played the game hard,” Flores said. “It was a good finish.
“For us, it’s close to being a win because we had to go to their place …”
The Hawks received outstanding games from Alex Flores, Sydnee Masuen and Brianna McCain, the latter two providing much of the attack for Anzar on Thursday.
Flores, meanwhile, kept Pacific Collegiate off the scoreboard with several saves in net.
“She had three big, game-saving saves,” Carlos Flores said. “Those kept us in the game.”
The Hawks will graduate just two players from this year’s team, including Michelle Chatley and Chelsea Woods.
