Jose Jimenez scored three goals, teammate Basilio Mehia added two more, and the Anzar Hawks picked up their first win of the season when they defeated host Trinity Christian 5-2 on Tuesday at Cal State University — Monterey Bay.
Tied 2-2 at the half with Trinity Christian, which was formerly Calvary Christian, the Hawks pocketed three unanswered goals in the second half en route to the victory. Anzar is now 1-3-1 in the Coastal Athletic League and 1-7-1 overall.
“My defense stepped up big time,” said Anzar head coach Jeremiah Martinez, highlighting the play of Eduardo Zepeda, Matthew Peters and keeper Damien Sowdeneko, who had approximately eight or nine saves. “They were the reason why there were no goals scored in the second half.”
Meanwhile, on the offensive end, Martinez switched from the defensive-minded 4-4-2 formation that was implemented in the first half to a swing offense in the final 40 minutes.
“And that opened up the field for us to become more offensive than defensive,” the head coach said.
After Trinity answered each of Anzar’s goals in the first half, resulting in a 2-2 tie at the break, the Hawks took the lead for good in the 47th minute when Jimenez scored his third goal of the day off an assist from Sermin Ramos.
Mehia then tacked on two more goals for insurance — one in the 67th minute and another in the 78th minute, the former coming off an assist from Glen Alameda.
Alameda also assisted on one of Jimenez’s two goals in the first half, one of which came in the 10th minute and the other coming in the 26th minute.
“It was pretty different for us,” Martinez said, adding that he played a freshmen-heavy squad during Tuesday’s game.
Martinez plans to use his full team come Thursday, though, when Anzar will host Marina for Homecoming at 3:30 p.m.
