SALINAS
Fresh off its 3-2 victory against Salinas on Thursday — its second win in a row — the San Benito boys soccer team quickly fell behind host Everett Alvarez on Saturday and couldn’t come back, as the Balers lost a key Tri-County Athletic League matchup to the Eagles by a 2-1 margin.
It is San Benito’s first loss since falling to Alisal on Jan. 12, and just its second defeat in its last six games. As far as the TCAL is concerned, a win over Everett Alvarez would have supplied the Balers with a 3-1-1 record heading into Tuesday’s battle with Gilroy, which is also 3-1-1.
Instead, San Benito falls to 2-2-1 in the TCAL, 5-6-1 overall.
“It was as close as the Salinas game, but Salinas ended up in our favor,” San Benito head coach Ramiro Ramos.
The Baler coach said the contest against the Eagles was “pretty intense,” leading to several yellow cards on both sides. An assistant coach for Everett Alvarez was red-carded, while San Benito mid Andy Hurtado received two yellows and will not play against Gilroy on Tuesday as a result.
Meanwhile, the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead within the first 25 minutes of play — one goal coming on a free kick. The Balers responded just before the end of the first half when Brian Cruz cut the deficit with a penalty kick of his own.
However, San Benito could not find the equalizer in the second half.
“It was pretty even, but we missed a few chances,” Ramos said. “We had a few opportunities, but we couldn’t capitalize.”
The Balers will look to rebound at Gilroy (3-1-1 TCAL, 7-3-2) on Tuesday. Kick-off is 5 p.m.
