Francisco Palomino scored two goals and the San Benito boys soccer team staved off a late rally against Gonzales on Thursday, as the Balers picked up their first win of the 2010-11 season with a 2-1 victory over the host Spartans.

Palomino scored in the 20th minute on a rebound off a corner kick, then again in the 50th minute when he beat three defenders from midfield to stake the Balers to a 2-0 lead.

Gonzales deposited its lone goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation on a penalty kick, but was unable to find the equalizer in the waning moments.

It is the first victory for first-year head coach Tony Deras, who felt his team controlled possession for much of Thursday’s contest.

“The team is understanding my philosophy of the game, which is more ball possession. So I was happy with that,” Deras said. “We controlled the whole game, pretty much.”

The only time Gonzales (0-3) was able to provide much offense, Deras added, was in the those final 10 minutes.

The Balers (1-0) are off until Tuesday when they will play at Monte Vista Christian. Kick-off is 5 p.m.
