Fresh off its first win against King City last week, the San Benito High boys soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie against The King’s Academy on Saturday in the Homestead Christmas Cup XVI at San Jose’s Willow Glen High.
The draw is the first of the season for San Benito, which is now 1-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the Christmas Cup tournament. The Balers will return to the Christmas Cup next Saturday against Saratoga at De Anza College for their final pool play match.
Last Saturday’s game, meanwhile, almost didn’t go San Benito’s way. The King’s Academy took a 1-0 lead just seven minutes into regulation, a score that held until halftime.
“But we had our chances in the first half, especially the first 15 minutes,” San Benito head coach Ramiro Ramos said. “That was the only chance they had to score.
“In the second, we had three or four more chances (to score).”
The equalizer didn’t come until the 60th minute when Jose Santoyo delivered a cross from the left side to freshman forward Ricardo Roque, who chipped it over the goalie from six yards out.
Early, first-half goals allowed is one of the areas Ramos is looking to improve upon, however. But playing upon a rain-soaked turf may have provided TKA with an advantage early on, as the Balers began to find their footing as the game progressed.
San Benito will play a non-conference game on Tuesday when it hosts Gonzales at 3:30 p.m.
