Sydnee Masuen scored two goals and pocketed two assists, Monica Medina and Brianna McCain each added a goal and an assist, and the Anzar Hawks defeated visiting Marina 5-1 on Saturday in San Juan Bautista.

The comfortable win allows the Hawks to keep pace with both Pacific Collegiate and Gonzales in Coastal Athletic League play. Anzar is now 5-3 in the CAL and 9-6 overall.

“We have a chance,” Anzar head coach Carlos Flores said. “We’re in the mix.”

The Hawks will need a little help in order to leapfrog either Pacific Collegiate or Gonzales in the standings — both teams sit in first and second place, respectively — although third-place Anzar does have one game remaining against the top team in PCS on Feb. 18.

The Hawks will visit York on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Saturday’s game against Marina saw Anzar jump out to a three-goal lead, despite a lack of players on both sides. Due to Monday’s holiday, several players were absent from the weekend’s league contest, leaving Anzar and Marina to square off 9-on-9.

“It was a very tactical game,” said Flores, who also noted the heat during Saturday’s play.

Off a cross from Masuen, McCain put the Hawks on the board first in the 5th minute, then set up teammate Valerie Quezada in the 17th minute to make it 2-0, Anzar.

Masuen then scored in the 24th minute on a takeaway to push the Hawks out to a three-goal cushion. Marina received its lone goal on the day in the 30th minute off a penalty kick when Anzar was called for tripping in the box.

The 3-1 score held until the 68th minute when Monica Medina found the back of the net off an assist from Masuen, while Medina herself then found Masuen in the 75th minute to make it 5-1.
