The Anzar Hawks rallied from a two-goal deficit against York Friday, but the visiting Falcons deposited the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute off a free kick to pocket a 3-2 victory in Coastal Athletic League play.
The game-winner came from just outside the 18-yard line and ended a late rally by the Hawks, who trailed 2-0 at halftime.
“They were just slow to the ball,” Anzar head coach Carlos Flores said. “They were just not having a good first half.”
Flores made several adjustments at halftime to kick-start his team, and 10 minutes after the second half started, Lauren Bellone cut Anzar’s deficit in half when she scored in the 50th minute off an assist from Sydnee Masuen.
In the 63rd minute, Masuen found Michelle Chatley for the equalizer.
“We had some (scoring) opportunities,” Flores said of the remaining 17 minutes of action, in which the Hawks banged one shot off the crossbar, while another sailed just above the crossbar.
“The (halftime) adjustments helped,” Flores said.
But a two-goal deficit in the first half was too much to overcome for the Hawks.
York scored first in the 5th minute, then again in the 20th minute — both goals coming off corner kicks — to take a two-goal lead.
Anzar, which falls to 1-2 in the CAL and 5-5 overall, will host Trinity Christian on Tuesday in San Juan Bautista. Kick-off is 3:30 p.m.
