Trailing 1-0 after 40 minutes of play, the visiting Gonzales Spartans pocketed two goals in the second half and surprised the Anzar girls soccer team with a 2-1 victory on Wednesday in San Juan Bautista.

The Coastal Athletic League matchup was just the second game the Hawks have played this year. Its 11-0 win over Trinity Christian on Jan. 13 — the CAL opener — was the team’s previous contest, as wet weather and soggy fields had postponed Anzar’s last two games against Marina and Pacific Collegiate.

The long layoff didn’t seem to hold the Hawks back too much on Wednesday against Gonzales, though. Lauren Bellone put Anzar up 1-0 in the 30th minute off an assist from Sydnee Masuen — a score that would hold until halftime.

However, in the second half, Gonzales knotted the game up at 1-all on a penalty kick in the 45th minute.

“And all the momentum swung to them,” Anzar head coach Carlos Flores said.

Gonzales then grabbed a 2-1 lead 15 minutes later when Anzar accidentally put the ball into its own net.

“It was kind of tough,” Flores added.

Flores said after Gonzales made a crossing pass toward the net, an Anzar player tried to clear the ball out of the zone, but instead deposited the ball into the net.

The Hawks will try to regroup on Friday when they will host York in San Juan Bautista at 3:30 p.m.
