A scoreless first half quickly turned into a one-goal deficit early in the second for the Anzar High boys’ soccer team on Thursday against Marina. But the Hawks managed to somehow find the offensive antidote with three unanswered goals in the final 40 minutes en route to a 3-1 victory over the host Mariners.

Following Marina’s go-ahead goal, which came within the first five minutes of the second half, Anzar responded just minutes later when Ivan Mejia delivered the equalizer off an assist by Carlos Gonzalez in the 47th minute.

Gonzalez then dribbled around several defenders in the 65th minute before punching in the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal that staked the Hawks to a 2-1 lead.

Anzar then padded its lead in the 78th minute — just before the end of regulation — when Mejia capitalized on a penalty kick after he was tripped from behind inside the box.

The win improves the Hawks to 2-3 in the Mission Trail Athletic League, 3-5 overall.

Anzar is off until Wednesday when it will travel to Carmel for a 3:30 p.m. matchup with the Padres.
