Although no one on the San Benito Lady Balers soccer team took home any coveted hardware when the Tri-County Athletic League handed out its year-end awards recently, they were honored with eight all-league selections, including four first-team nods.

Sara Yamasaki, Elizabeth Miller, Karly Leon and Marissa Adame were all named first team in the TCAL, which recognized 18 players from around the league.

Yamasaki, a junior mid, earned her first-team honor after leading the Lady Balers with 12 goals scored and eight assists this season, while the keeper Miller compiled 117 saves in net. Leon was third on the team with six goals, and Adame helped anchor a defensive line for the Lady Balers that allowed just 1.4 goals a game.

San Benito’s four first-team selections were the second most in the TCAL after the Lady Balers finished runner-up to Gilroy with a 10-2 record. The Mustangs compiled a 12-0 record and received five first-team selections as a result, including Indra Garcia, Katelyn Nebesnick, Monique Barragan, Cynthia Sanchez and Taylor Slattery.

Nebesnick was also named Most Valuable Player of the TCAL, while Barragan was named Defensive MVP.

Salinas’ Alexia Ragsac was selected as the Offensive MVP after she compiled a league-high 19 goals, teammate Tessa Lee was chosen as the Midfield MVP and Everett Alvarez’s Mayra Hernandez was named Goalkeeper MVP.

The TCAL also recognized Alisal’s Jessica Meza, Gilroy’s Alexandria Maldonado, Maritza Nava of North Salinas and Cynthia Sanchez of Gilroy with MVP awards for the top senior, junior, sophomore and freshman, respectively.

San Benito, which finished its season with a 12-6-2 overall record, also had four second-team selections, as Hannah Cobb, Samantha Moreno, Daniela Ocampo and Kaitlyn Fontaine were honored with all-league nods.

While Moreno’s presence was felt heavily on San Benito’s defensive line, Ocampo scored three goals and had three assists for the Lady Balers this season.

Cobb, who led the team last year in goals, suffered an injury on Jan. 27 against Gilroy and didn’t play in another game for the Lady Balers. However, the San Benito junior still managed to finish with eight goals scored on the season, which was second on the team.

Cobb was also named to the Richard Chamberlin Sportsmanship Team.
