Although they led 3-1 midway through the second half, the San Benito girls soccer team couldn’t stave off Santa Catalina’s late surge on Thursday in Hollister, where the two teams finished in a 3-3 tie.

San Benito carried a two-goal cushion in the second half when Hannah Cobb scored on an unassisted breakaway in the 65th minute, but Catalina cut the deficit in half just five minutes later when a shot on net skipped across the wet grass and into the back of the net.

The visiting Cougars then pocketed the equalizer at about the 80th minute on a penalty kick after the Lady Balers were called for tripping inside the box, San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez said.

“But overall it was a well played game,” said Alvarez, who was pleased with his team’s rebound performance after Tuesday’s disappointing 5-1 loss at Santa Cruz.

“From the last game we played to today’s game, we regrouped,” Alvarez said. “We had a very good practice (on Wednesday). We put it in play today and it worked. The passing was outstanding.”

The Lady Balers went up 1-nil in the 18th minute when Sara Yamasaki split the defenders on a through ball up the middle to a streaking Karly Leon, who deposited the game’s first goal.

Catalina would tie the match in the 30th minute, but San Benito answered seven minutes later when Leon passed out to the right side to Samantha Moreno, who found the back of the net from 18 yards out to give the Lady Balers a 2-1 lead at halftime.

“I was happy with their performance after taking that loss against Santa Cruz,” Alvarez said. “We have the ability to get it together again.”

San Benito is now 0-2-1 overall.

The Lady Balers will return to the pitch on Saturday when they will host Milpitas at 11 a.m.
