The San Benito girls soccer team opened the new season – and the Watsonville Tournament – on Tuesday with a 1-0 overtime victory over Santa Cruz.
The game went into extra time tied at 0-0, but less than three minutes into the first half of overtime, freshman Irais Santoyo gave the Balers the lead.
The Baler defense then shut down the Santa Cruz attack by not allowing another shot on goal.
“Our defense played really well,” head coach Ben Alvarez said. “I think we were really matched up well against Santa Cruz. They are a good team.”
He continued, “We played very, very well.”
San Benito will play its second game of the tournament Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against host Watsonville High.
