Despite trailing Everett Alvarez early, the San Benito Lady Balers rifled off seven unanswered goals on Friday en route to an easy 7-1 victory over the Eagles in Tri-County Athletic League play.

The visiting Eagles went up 1-0 within the first 10 minutes of regulation, but fell behind by the 27th minute when Samantha Moreno wrapped a corner kick around the post to give the Lady Balers a 2-1 lead.

San Benito never trailed again.

“The girls came out a little overconfident,” San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez said. “They surprised us and they made a couple of good runs.”

Despite the early deficit, San Benito’s Tori Perez deposited the game-tying goal in the 17th minute off an assist from Moreno, who then put the Lady Balers ahead for good some 10 minutes later.

The 2-1 score held until halftime.

With Everett Alvarez held to just a single score in the game, though, every goal for San Benito thereafter was insurance.

Karly Leon made it 3-1 in the 45th minute off an assist from Sara Yamasaki, while Leon then set up teammate Berniece Bribiesca in the 52nd minute. Bribiesca then assisted Yamasaki in the 68th minute, Daniela Ocampo followed with an unassisted goal in the 69th minute off an indirect kick from 20 yards out, and Ocampo then found Yamasaki in the 74th minute to round out San Benito’s five-goal second half.

“This was huge,” said Alvarez, whose team keeps pace with first-place Gilroy (10-0 TCAL) with the win.

San Benito, which outshot the Eagles by a 19-4 margin, is now 9-1 in the TCAL and 11-4-2 overall.

The Lady Balers will host Salinas (7-3-1 TCAL) on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
