After going 1-1 in a tournament at Watsonville last week, the Anzar High girls soccer team visited Saratoga on Monday to take on Prospect.

But two second-half goals by Prospect lifted the Panthers past the Hawks, 2-0.

The loss drops Anzar to 1-2 on the early season.

“We started the second half a little slow,” said Anzar head coach Carlos Flores, noting that Prospect picked up the go-ahead score just 10 minutes into the second stanza.

The Hawks were playing shorthanded in the contest, however. A roster with 21 players had dwindled to just 14 for Monday’s game.

Last week in Watsonville, the Hawks managed to split a pair of one-goal games with Harbor and Notre Dame.

Anzar lost to Harbor 1-0 to open the tournament, but Flores wasn’t too disappointed with the defeat. After all, Harbor had won the Watsonville tournament a year ago.

“It was a really good game,” he said. “Just one little mental mistake. That’s what cost us the game.

“But it was only our first game.”

The Hawks rebounded in their second contest to defeat Notre Dame, 1-0. Sydnee Masuen set up Brianna McCain for the game’s only goal.

Anzar (1-2) will return to the pitch on Friday at Soledad. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m.

The Hawks again a day later on Saturday, when they will visit Watsonville to take on St. Francis CCC at 2:30 p.m.
