The San Benito softball team was handed just its second loss of the season last Saturday in the championship game of the Steinbeck Classic in Salinas, where league rival Notre Dame silenced the Lady Balers by a 7-0 margin.

San Benito (15-2, 4-0 TCAL) finished in second place in the tournament as a result after defeating San Lorenzo Valley 8-2 in the semifinal game.

“After the SLV game, I thought we were gonna hit the ball pretty good,” said San Benito manager Scott Smith, whose team connected on 13 hits against San Lorenzo Valley.

Jessica Vest hit a three-run homer, Jessica Steigelman added a two-run homer and Brittany Hoff hit a triple as the Lady Balers banged out a double-digit hit total. Pitcher Paige Miguel (7IP, 3H, 2R, 1ER, 8K), meanwhile, allowed just three hits and struck out eight to earn the complete-game victory.

However, San Benito’s bats went cold against Notre Dame later in the day, as the Lady Balers were limited to just four hits in the loss.

“I think the girls tried too hard,” Smith added. “But I anticipate a much better outing the next time around.”

While San Benito will host Notre Dame on May 11, it will host Gilroy today, Wednesday, at 4:30 p.m.

JV Note:

The San Benito Lady Balers junior varsity softball team managed to win its bracket at the Steinbeck Classic last weekend.

Behind Megan Sabatinni, the Lady Balers defeated Salinas 4-3 in a 12-inning semifinal game, then topped Carlmont 2-0 in the championship later in the day.

Sabatinni pitched all 12 innings against Salinas to earn the victory. It was the Cowboys’ first loss of the season.

Sabatinni then belted a two-run homer against Carlmont in the championship final.
