Tiffany Maielua’s single to right field scored Averi Pavese from third base and the Anzar Hawks defeated visiting Anchorpoint Christian 9-8 in the bottom of the seventh on Thursday in Coastal Athletic League play.

Pavese singled on to start the bottom half of the seventh, and teammate Casandra Vallejo moved her into scoring position with a base hit. Pavese then stole third base, making it an easy jog home following Maielua’s walk-off hit.

It is the third straight one-run game for the Hawks, who are now 3-3 overall.

“It was an exciting game,” Anzar manager Felipe Vallejo said.

The one-run ending was only half the story, though.

The Hawks fell behind 7-0 before they plated their first run in the bottom of the third inning. Anzar managed to battle back, and not only knotted the score at 7-all in the sixth, but also took a one-run lead later in the inning.

Anchorpoint tied the ball game at 8-all in the top half of the seventh, only to suffer a narrow loss in the home half of the inning.

“For being down 6-0 going into the bottom of the third, the girls hung in there and fought hard, scoring a little bit, scoring a little bit,” Vallejo said.

Maielua (3IP) started the game for Anzar, while teammate Kim Naranjo (4IP) closed the game out and picked up the win in the process.

Vallejo highlighted the play of the catcher Pavese, who scored the winning run for Anzar on Thursday.

“She’s been an all-star for our team,” Vallejo said. “Without her, we would really be hurting.”

As part of its home-and-home series with the Warriors, Anzar will visit Anchorpoint Christian in Gilroy on Monday. First pitch is 4 p.m.
