After squandering a one-run lead in the top of the seventh, the Anzar High softball team received a last-minute pick-me-up in the home half on Tuesday when Tiffany Maieluea hit an RBI double to lift the Hawks over Greenfield 9-8 in Coastal Athletic League play.

Maieluea’s hit plated Gabby Medina for the winning run, and improved Anzar to 2-3 overall on the season, 2-3 in the CAL.

Casandra Vallejo hit a 2-RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to give Anzar a one-run lead heading into the final frame, but Greenfield managed to tie the game briefly in the seventh before Maieluea connected on the walk-off double.

Kim Naranjo started for the Hawks on the mound, and Maieluea closed out the game to earn the win.

Tuesday’s victory was almost the opposite result of Monday’s game with Marina, when the Mariners pocketed two runs in the bottom of the sixth to leapfrog the Hawks by a 13-12 margin.

Anzar will now play a home-and-home series with Anchorpoint Christian on Wednesday and Thursday. The Hawks will visit the Gilroy school on Wednesday, and will then host them on Thursday. Both games are scheduled for 4 p.m.
