Starting pitcher Megan Sabbatini delivers a pitch Saturday afternoon as the Balers beat St. Francis 7-0.

A little more than two months after the San Benito High softball team clinched a seventh-consecutive Central Coast Section title, starting pitcher Megan Sabbatini was named to ESPN RISE Cal-Hi Sports Second Team All-State team as a pitcher.

Sabbatini, a junior, is the third Baler in two years to be given such an honor. It was well deserved for the Baler right-hander who carried San Benito to a 23-3 record.

Sabbatini led the Balers to 12 shutout wins on the year and was dominate inside the circle, striking out nearly 10 batters per game. She was grateful for the state-wide recognition.

“It’s kind of an honor,” she said. “It shows how much hard work I put into it.”

The honor goes alongside the Tri-County Athletic League Pitcher of the Year Award and a first-team all-league selection. But as a team, it shows just how good San Benito is, she said.

“It shows we work hard the whole year to get where we are,” she said. “We always want to get better for college. We just have to work harder next year and see what happens.”

Next year, the Balers will return all nine starters to their championship team. For the first times, the Balers will also play in the Monterey Bay League in the newly formed equity league.

Despite the team’s youth, San Benito finished 10th overall in the ESPN team rankings with no senior starters.
