SAN JOSE
After completing the regular season with a 26-1 overall record, the San Benito High softball team was awarded the No. 1 seed in next week’s Central Coast Section Division I Championships on Saturday, and as a result will receive a first-round bye.
It is the second year in a row the Haybalers have earned the No. 1 seed, and the third time in the last four years.

San Benito, winners of its last seven games, won’t play until Saturday’s quarterfinal round, where it will square off against the winner of Wednesday’s first-round matchup between No. 9 Leigh (17-9-1) and No. 8 Los Gatos (20-6-1).
The Balers previously defeated both Los Gatos and Leigh earlier this season. They posted a 2-1 victory against Los Gatos to open their regular season on March 5, while also recording an 8-2 win over Leigh a month later, on April 9.
If they win, San Benito would have the chance to play in the Division I semifinals against either No. 4 Santa Teresa (22-5), No. 5 Carlmont (20-6), No. 12 Wilcox (11-16) or No. 13 Palo Alto (10-15), with Santa Teresa-Palo Alto and Carlmont-Wilcox scheduled first-round matchups.
Other first-round matchups include No. 6 Monta Vista (19-2) versus No. 11 St. Francis (14-11-1), and No. 7 Leland (21-6) against No. 10 Salinas (18-7).
The No. 2 seed in the Division I bracket went to Homestead (21-3), while Gilroy, which finished runner-up in the Tri-County Athletic League to San Benito, earned the No. 3 seed.
Like the Balers, both Homestead and Gilroy earned a first-round bye as well, but both appear on the opposite side of San Benito’s bracket.
The CCS Division I Championship is scheduled for Saturday, May 28.
