The old saying holds true
– there’s no place like home. We made it home safe and sound
from our 10-day trip to Gallup, NM. What a fun and exciting trip it
was. We spent time at the Grand Canyon, Walnut Canyon National
Monument and the Petrified Forest. Each day was a new, fun
adventure but the rodeo was the best part. The
event featured 875 contestants from the United States, Canada
and Australia.

The old saying holds true – there’s no place like home. We made it home safe and sound from our 10-day trip to Gallup, NM. What a fun and exciting trip it was. We spent time at the Grand Canyon, Walnut Canyon National Monument and the Petrified Forest. Each day was a new, fun adventure but the rodeo was the best part. The event featured 875 contestants from the United States, Canada and Australia.
Cheyenne Rey, Clayton Bacon and Brody Sans represented California and made us all proud. The kids did fantastically and made memories that will last a lifetime. Cheyenne qualified in the barrel racing and goat tying, Clayton qualified in the breakaway roping and Brody qualified in the bull riding.
Cheyenne did well in the barrels in the first go but her horse needed a little time to adjust to the high altitude so she wasn’t as fast as she wanted to be. She had a great run in her second go. The Top 20 in the average make it back to the short go and the heartbreaker for Cheyenne was that she ended up in the 21st position after two gos so she didn’t make the short round in barrels. She was sitting 14th in the goat tying before her goat got up in the second round thus sealing her fate for the short go in that as well.
Clayton didn’t have any luck in the breakaway roping, missing his first calf and breaking the barrier on his second calf.
Brody placed 10th in the first round of bull riding, third in the second round and went into the short round sitting fourth in the average. In the short round, he drew a bull that bucked good for the first half of the ride, then quit. He scored a 50 on the bull, which gave him a total of 177 on three head, but he had the option for a reride. The leader was sitting with 182 on three head so Brody took the reride and he drew a bucking son of a gun. He made an awesome ride for about six seconds before getting bucked off. If he would have kept his previous score, he would have ended up fourth in the nation, but since he took the reride he ended up ninth in the nation. We are so proud of him and of all the kids who competed there. It was such an awesome experience for the kids. They met kids from all over the United States, Canada and Australia. Seminars and motivational speakers from World Champions and NFR contestants were on hand each day to talk to the kids and dances were held almost every night. It was definitely an experience of a lifetime, one the kids will remember forever. Thanks to everyone for all your support for the kids.
We weren’t the only ones rodeoing over the Fourth of July weekend. Wyatt Bourdet, Kent Hirdes, Hec Hurley, Lee Whitney and John Rianda spent the Fourth in Bridgeport for their annual 4th of July Team Ranch Rodeo. Congratulations to Wyatt, Kent, Hec and Lee for winning the team championship this year, along with many individual championships as well. Lee and Hec won the Double Mugging, Kent won the Bronc Riding, Wyatt and Kent won the team roping and the four of them won the calf branding as well. They cleaned house in Bridgeport this year. Way to go guys!
While we were headed home from Gallup, the Strohn Family headed to Fallon, Nev. for the annual Silver State High School Rodeo Championships. Best of luck to you there, Blaine.
The Salinas Rodeo begins next week. It’s their 100th anniversary so it’s sure to be a special one. The PBR kicks off the week on Wednesday night where I’m sure you might be able to see Hollister’s own Brendon Clark ride. Brendon is on fire right now as he’s won the last three events he’s entered. Maybe part of his hot streak is that he just recently became engaged to Allison Renz! Congratulations to you both!
