The California Highway Patrol is donating 15 radar units to the Hollister Police Department. Thank you very much. Now let’s put them to good use.

Local police handed out only 249 speeding tickets in the city limits last year. On average, that’s less than one speeder caught each day. Our safety, and that of our children, is at risk.

There’s constant griping about speeding downtown and near schools. Residents in areas like Clearview Drive are up in arms about speeders in their neighborhoods. And no one likes the feeling of an impatient tailgater breathing down their neck when they are driving the speed limit.

Part of the problem is that HPD has had only two hand-held radar guns to work with. To use the guns, police cars had to be sitting still as drivers whizzed by. But the new equipment allows officers to clock speeders from a moving squad car.

Police Chief Jeff Miller says he wants speeding enforcement near schools and downtown, but it may have to wait because he’s worried about paying overtime.

We say safety comes first – spend some money. Set up some speed traps. Slow people down. And have officers flip on the new radar units while on their regular patrols. If speeders fly by, nab them.

We’ve harped on police to crack down on speeders before someone gets run down. Now that the department is fully armed with modern equipment, we hope to see officers using it to make our streets safe.
