Roundup: Anzar places fourth at MTL cross-country meet

In a Mission Trail Athletic League cross-country meet Thursday, a strong run by Diego Leon helped Anzar finished in fourth place out 13 teams at Toro Park in Salinas.

San Benito carried the VFW Memorial Trophy to midfield for the ceremonial coin toss and ran right back to Hollister with it for the third straight season three hours later.

Tennis: The Balers’ undefeated duo

Less than a year ago, Cathy Frusetta and Berenice Bribiesca were only hoping to contribute to the San Benito tennis team in 2011. For Bribiesca, now a senior, it was her first year playing tennis. Frusetta, meanwhile, was trying to gain experience in exhibition matches.

Taking its first possession Friday inside Pinewood territory, the Anzar football team looked to keep the momentum of its first home win going, but an errant throw, an interception and a 60-yard touchdown return later, the Hawks were quickly put in a hole.

Football: Monterey upends San Benito 28-7

The Haybalers jumped out to a quick lead Friday in Monterey, but there wasn't much else that went their way. Monterey shut down San Benito for the rest of the game en route to a 28-7 win. For the Balers, it was the second consecutive week being held to just one score.

Wrestling: Warriors, San Benito High set to partner in “wrestling hub”

After spending the past year practicing out of the Maze Middle School gym, the Hollister Warriors youth wrestling program - and its 35 wrestlers - will open a permanent home later this month - possibly alongside the San Benito High wrestling program.

Thanks to another medalist showing by senior Emiley Palmquist, the San Benito girls golf team squeezed by Salinas 288-301 Tuesday at San Juan Oaks Golf Course.
