Behind 15 points from Ellie Burley, the San Benito girls basketball team advanced to the second round of the Alisal Winter Jam Tournament on Thursday, beating Aptos 60-22.

Through nearly 80 minutes, the San Benito boys soccer team couldn’t take advantage of its limited opportunities against league foe North Salinas.

Boys basketball fans will have a chance to watch local action as the Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament continues today and Saturday at Gilroy High. Gilroy and Christopher will be joined at the tourney by Live Oak, San Benito, Anzar, Aptos, Harbor and Pioneer. The varsity title game is set for 4 p.m. Saturday.

In only the fifth game under new head coach Alex Frank, the Anzar boys basketball team experienced something they may never see again.

After playing three games in three days, the Anzar boys soccer team improved to 2-1-1 Wednesday with a 2-1 win over KIPP Collegiate in San Juan Bautista. It was the Hawks second-consecutive win after defeating Pinewood School 3-0 Tuesday.

Freshman guard Kareem Bath scored 11 points, but Gavilan College’s men’s basketball team suffered an 83-62 loss at Columbia on Wednesday.

The Balers fell to 2-3 Tuesday, losing to Presentation 69-17 in San Jose.
