Pebble Beach – The tough conditions at a course such as Spyglass Hills can make even the best golfer squirm, let alone a high school freshman.
“One little shot goes astray and it’s rattling in those woods and you’re not finding it,” Anzar coach Eric Lopez said.
However, Hawks freshman Tim Trefts didn’t let it get to him too much as he fired a team-best round of 49 at the world-renowned course as the Hawks placed fifth in the Mission Trail Athletic League tournament.
“That was actually a really good score for him for his first time seeing the course,” Lopez said. “The next couple of years I think he’ll really come on.”
Travis Williams and Ira Ellison both shot 50, Chris Taay shot 54, Erik Olson carded a 60 and Nick Tanouye shot 61.
Just as much as it was an opportunity to gain experience, it was an exciting chance for the Anzar golfers to play one of the country’s top public golf courses.
“They loved it,” Lopez said. “It was just a pleasure to take them down there and just really cool to see them excited when they came off the course.”
The MTAL regular season wraps up Thursday when the Hawks host the final league tournament at San Juan Oaks. Unfortunately for Anzar, it will be without four golfers who are taking a college visit.
“It could be a tough day for us,” Lopez said. “We were actually really looking forward to having them on our course. We were a little bit disappointed to find out (we would be missing four golfers).”
