In taking its action, the California Air Resources Board issued a challenge to the American auto industry to produce a car that could meet the nation’s most stringent air-quality rules in a state with some of the country’s dirtiest air.
The industry objected to the new rules saying it would force use of unproved technology that would increase the price of automobiles.
Auto manufacturers, which in the past have shown a disappointing resistance to comply to almost every safety and fuel-efficiency requirement, would do well to channel their energy, innovation and resources toward meeting the new standards instead of delaying the inevitable outcome desired by state residents.
