Monday after he threatened to shoot up the school.
Hollister – A San Andreas High School student was arrested on campus Monday after he threatened to shoot up the school.
The Hollister Police Department arrested Jesse Gutierrez, 18, after a teacher allegedly overheard him saying that it was “a good day for a shooting at school,” said Officer Rosie Betanio, a spokeswoman for the Hollister Police Department. Gutierrez is still in the San Benito County Jail on a felony charge of making threats. Bail is set at $10,000, according to jail personnel.
Gutierrez did not have any weapons at the time of his arrest, which occurred on the San Andreas campus at 12:22pm Monday, according the police report.
The investigation has been turned over to the district attorney’s office, but there is no reason to believe that the school is in any danger, Betanio said.
San Andreas Principal Mike Sanchez said he thought the school was very safe, but that this was a good reminder to students that they should be aware of what they say on school premises.
“If you make a statement that threatens other students’ safety, we’re not going to take it lightly,” Sanchez said.
No emergency procedures were put into place and school continued as usual.
Betanio said threats from juveniles at school are fairly commonplace – either toward the school or another student. If these threats are perceived as breaking the law, the students are arrested.
On May 2, police arrested a man for making threats of a Columbine-like incident at Spring Grove Elementary.
Neither incident is believed to have been sincere, but all threats of violence on campus are taken seriously by law enforcement agencies.
