Have you run out of ideas to keep your children busy, happy and learning this summer? Look no further than your local San Martin Animal Shelter.
A great short-term project, that will not only be educational but rewarding, is to foster shelter kittens for four to six weeks. Once the kittens are about 2 pounds (or about 8 weeks old), you return the kittens to the shelter so they can be spayed or neutered and put up for adoption.
Fostering kittens is easy and requires minimal expense (dry food, some canned food, water and litter). The most important requirement is handling the kittens several times a day. The hours your children will spend observing and interacting with the kittens is a great substitute for video games.Fostering kittens will help your children learn compassion and responsibility for other living creatures. Who knows, this summer project may spark a lifetime interest in animals for your children and it is never too early to encourage community service.
Please head over to the Santa Clara County Animal Shelter at 12370 Murphy Ave. in San Martin (just south of the airport). The shelter is open Monday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and weekends from noon to 5 p.m.
