Although considered to be one of its biggest rivals, the visiting Salinas Cowboys were no match for San Benito on Thursday as the Haybalers picked up another win in Tri-County Athletic League action, earning victories in each dual meet.
The Baler boys varsity team won 114-72; the Lady Balers varsity team downed Salinas 121-54; while both the boys and girls junior varsity teams topped the Cowboys 92-45 and 88-81, respectively.
Varsity freshman Graham Spurzem added another Central Coast Section qualifying time as well when he clocked a 1:51.48 in the 200 free. It is Spurzem’s third individual CCS time — he had previously qualified in the 200 IM and the 100 back — and his sixth section-qualifying time in all as he is part of all three of San Benito’s relay teams.
Senior Lady Baler Demi Gatrell added to her CCS events as well when she recorded a 2:19.76 in the 200 IM on Thursday. Also a member of all three relay teams, Gatrell has qualified to CCCS in a total of five events, including the 100 fly.
San Benito, which is now 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the TCAL, is off until April 16 when it will visit Alisal at 3:30 p.m. The team’s next home meet will take place on April 22-23 when both Palma and Notre Dame will visit Hollister.
