Anzar’s Nick Tanouye becomes the first golfer in school history
to qualify to the CCS Regionals
CARMEL VALLEY
For Anzar High boys golf, the list begins and ends with Nick Tanouye.
Tanouye carded an 87 at the Mission Trail Athletic League Finals Thursday at the Quail Lodge Resort and Golf Club in Carmel Valley, and qualified to next week’s Central Coast Section Regionals as a result.
Perhaps more impressive, though, is that Tanouye becomes the very first golfer in Anzar High school history to qualify to CCS Regionals, boys head golf coach Will Trefts confirmed. The CCS Regionals will take place Tuesday on the West Course at the Rancho Canada Golf Club in Carmel Valley.
Tanouye will tee off at 8:16 a.m. on hole No. 10 with Jason Kuo of Milpitas and Barrett Johnson of Woodside.
In order to qualify toward the following week’s CCS Championships, Tanouye would have to record a top eight score at Regionals.
Meanwhile, Tanouye’s teammates Tim Trefts and Colby Castro each shot a 91 at the MTAL Finals, which saw Carmel take the league title after a strong regular season, but finish second on Thursday with a 383. Stevenson won the MTAL Finals tournament with a 378, while Pacific Grove was third with a 395.
Carmel and Stevenson both earned automatic bids toward the CCS Regionals, while Pacific Grove was awarded an at-large berth.
Only the top three individuals not on those three qualifying teams were given CCS bids, and Tanouye found his way in with the 87, along with King City’s Sergio Diaz. Soledad’s Troy Armstrong also qualified as an individual when he shot a 6-over 77.
