GILROY
A young man was shot down and killed in daylight on a residential street just a block from City Hall and the Gilroy Police Department.
About 2 p.m., residents near the intersection of Church and Sixth streets heard two shots, and then a rapid fire of more shots. When they came outside, a young man, who neighbors said was 18 years old, was lying in the middle of the street near 165 Church St.
Police secured the scene, blocking Sixth Street off from Church Street to near the edge of Eigleberry Street. Police covered the body with a yellow tarp, but left it in the same place, as they scanned the area for evidence. Police would not immediately comment on what transpired.
More than 30 people stood on the outside of the perimeter of crime scene tape and watch more than a dozen law enforcement officers from at least three agencies. Among the crowd were family members of the slain teen, including his brother-in-law and mother, neighbors said.
The shooting comes just four days after a gang fight left a 21-year-old bleeding from a stab wound outside Taco Bell in south Gilroy. There is no evidence, however, that the two incidents are related. Police have suspects in the stabbing, but had not arrested anyone for the crime as of Monday night.
