The San Benito boys tennis team was narrowly defeated for the second straight time by a 4-3 margin on Monday against visiting Carmel at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister.
Although the Haybalers managed to sweep the doubles portion on Monday, Carmel earned wins in all of the singles matches, leading to the one-point victory.
Connor Bray and Michael Jensen defeated Austin Robertson and Corin O’Grady 6-1, 6-1, and Jacob Panger and Geoff Muzik topped Mark Stillwell and Taylor Hoffman 7-5, 7-6 (7-4). San Benito won the No. 3 doubles match by default after Carmel was without a third doubles team on Monday.
The sweep in doubles wasn’t enough for San Benito, though, which just lost to Gilroy by a similar 4-3 clip last Thursday.
In singles, Carmel’s Russell Poole earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kyle Skinner; teammate Bryden Haas defeated Jacob Garcia 6-1, 6-1; Padre Rowand Hyland silenced Eric Johnson 6-0, 6-0; and Tyler Winick ensured the singles sweep with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Travis Mills.
San Benito (4-3), which has now lost three straight matches after opening the season with four consecutive victories, will look to snap its streak on April 13 against Palma in Salinas. Match time is 4 p.m.
