The San Benito boys’ tennis team not only swept the doubles portion of its match for the fifth time in seven chances on Tuesday at Gilroy’s Christopher High School, but it swept the singles category for the first time this season as well en route to a 7-0 victory in Tri-County Athletic League action.

Playing against a youthful Cougars team, the Balers won 85 games to Christopher’s 23, including a dominant performance in doubles, in which San Benito won 36 of a possible 38 games played.

But the bigger story was perhaps the Balers’ performance at singles, where San Benito managed to pick up wins from No. 1 to No. 4.

Top singles player Jacob Garcia downed Vesna Kahay 6-0, 6-3; Nick Trillo dispatched Kyle Kwong 6-2, 6-4; Alex Reilly defeated Jeffery Kong 7-5, 6-2; and Geoff Muzik topped Matt Lombardo 6-2, 6-3.

Doubles was very much a similar story. San Benito’s top pairing in Kyle Skinner and Eric Johnson silenced Jerry Kuang and Austin Sepalneda 6-0, 6-0; Brian Becerra and Sunny Singh nearly posted the same outcome against Ryan Cockcroti and Anthony Lei 6-0, 6-1; and Jacob and Andre Panger completed the team sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Cougars Nate Norman and Trent Goris.

Tuesday’s win over Christopher improves San Benito to a game above .500. The Balers are now 3-2 in the TCAL, 4-3 overall.

San Benito is off until next Tuesday, March 29, when it will travel to Monte Vista Christian. Match time is 4 p.m.
