A doubles sweep kept the San Benito boys tennis team perfect on the early season as the Balers defeated Palma 5-2 on Thursday at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister — the league opener for both teams.

Michael Jensen and Conner Bray set the tone at No. 1 doubles when they defeated Ethan Shaw and Christian Bengard 6-1, 6-3, and the No. 2 team of Jacob Panger of Eric Johnson followed suit with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Chieftains Joe Corner and Austin Walters.

Balers Travis Mills and Geoff Muzik made it 3-0 in the doubles category with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Henry Marassou and Ernie Hurta.

San Benito also won the middle two matches in singles to earn the overall victory. At No. 2, Jacob Garcia defeated AJ Yates by injury default — Garcia was leading 3-2 at the time of the injury default — and No. 3 Austin Pan edged Hunter Johnson 7-6, 6-3.

Palma earned its lone victories at No. 1 and No. 4 singles. In the top spot, Chieftain Dominick Ottone defeated Kyle Skinner 6-1, 7-5, while Arjun Sidhu upended Richard Alavera 6-0, 6-1 at the 4-spot.

San Benito (2-0, 1-0 TCAL) will visit Monte Vista Christian on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Meanwhile, the Balers’ scheduled match against Monterey last week was postponed until March 29.
