The San Benito girls tennis team’s four-match winning streak was halted on Thursday when a strong Salinas squad swept the singles portion en route to a 6-1 victory in Tri-County Athletic League action.

“They’re pretty strong in all the singles,” San Benito head coach Ed Cecena said.

The Balers are now 5-4 overall.

Not much fell in the Baler’s favor in singles. Joy Johnson defeated San Benito’s Hayley Barker 6-3, 6-1, while Cowboy Taylor Schwartz topped Kristina Slavich 6-1, 7-5.

“I was glad to see her come back and make it a competitive match by nearly pulling out the second set,” Cecena said of Slavich.

At the No. 3 spot, San Benito’s Audrey Marshall was forced to pull out after suffering an ankle injury, while Salinas’ Rachel Kruger defeated Kelsey Slavich 6-2, 6-2.

The Balers’ lone win came at the No. 1 doubles spot, where Erin Glasspool and Alex Triolo remained undefeated on the season, albeit just barely.

“It was a really tight, tennis doubles match,” Cecena said.

Nevertheless, Glasspool and Triolo defeated Salinas’ Casey Watt and Melinda Obusada 7-5, 7-6.

Salinas earned wins in the other two doubles matches, however. Kalah Segal and Paige Zimmerman beat Olivia Diaz and Alex Garcia 6-1, 6-3, and Julia Rosen and Kaylee Wong defeated Anne Tobias and Gianna Brigantino 6-2, 6-0.

San Benito is off until Tuesday when it will host Sobrato at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club. Match time is 4 p.m.
