Dear Editor:

Last week, Ross Blasingame suggested that some of our July 4 activities were eliminated due to the motorcycle rally. For Ross and others, there are more activities since the rally started!

The community fireworks display moved from the high school to Margarette Maze School before the 50th anniversary rally in 1997, and is still a very popular event.

Many neighborhoods now have block parties with city sanctioned street closures.

The annual “Kiddie Parade” (for kids of all ages) is still a July 4th tradition. It begins at 9 a.m. at the Park and Ride parking lot at Veterans Memorial Park and finishes at Margarette Maze School on Meridian Street. It is led by Uncle Sam and Betsy Ross, and most participants adorn themselves, their bikes, trikes, wagons, strollers, their pets, etc., in red, white and blue. Everyone receives an American flag and is invited to refreshments at the end of the parade.

Many families enjoy their backyard barbecues with friends and relatives, and, yes, many enjoy the rally.
