Cheers For the ‘Balers
The Following people, organizations and events deserve either a Thumbs Up or a Thumbs Down this week.

THUMBS UP: For our veterans. We respect, honor and remember the sacrifices you have made for our country.

THUMBS UP: For the Emmaus House, which will finally be able to open its doors to battered women in San Benito county after 10 years of hard work. While the shelter has been built and ready to go for months, organizers lacked the funds to operate it in its first year. But thanks to a $435,000 grant from the state, the county’s sole battered women’s shelter, which volunteers have donated thousands of man hours to make a reality, should open in early 2006. The people who have spent their time and energy working toward this goal will finally be able to see their hard work come to fruition with a shelter that will give distressed women and their children a new start.

THUMBS UP: For the ‘Balers football team which took down the powerhouse Palma Chieftains Thursday night in an impressive fashion. By scoring 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, the ‘Balers not only showcased a dominant defense and offensive pyrotechnics, they came from behind to snag a victory from a strong team and land a spot in the CCS playoffs. It was an impressive win, and we know the town is behind Coach Chris Cameron and his team as they enter the next round. Well done.

THUMBS DOWN: For the price of gas in Hollister. After the Free Lance reported Tuesday that gas prices in Hollister were significantly higher than those in Gilroy and other nearby communities, prices dropped here by as much as 18 cents within days. Coincidence? Simple market forces? Shame? We can’t help feeling there was some gouging going on.
