The Anzar High track and field team will send six individuals competing in five different events to Tuesday’s Mission Trail Athletic League Trials in Pacific Grove after several Hawks earned a top-two spot at last Friday’s Coastal Athletic League Championships in Pebble Beach.
Anzar head coach Danny Lowell was pleased with his team’s performance at the CAL Championships, which were held at Stevenson.
“Everyone we thought we were going to take, we’re taking,” said Lowell, adding that everyone on the Hawks set a personal record during Friday’s performance.
It was the Anzar girls’ team which shined, though, as the Hawks compiled 49 points and finished in third place in the CAL.
Valerie Quezada took first in the 3,200 meters with a time of 13:13.31, and will advance to the MTAL Trials as a result. She will be joined by Crystal Prado, who was first in the long jump with a leap of 15-03, as well as Sabrina Gonzales, who took second in the 800 after clocking a 2:43.70.
The girls 4×100 relay team also qualified to the MTAL Trials. Made up of Gonzales, Prado, Myra Quezada and Melissa Weckerle, the foursome recorded a 56.37 to take first place at CALs.
“The relay team did better than we thought,” Lowell said. “We changed a few things and they did the best they’ve done this year.”
Meanwhile, on the boys’ side, Izzy Parra was the lone qualifier after he recorded a 2:04.53 in the 800 — good enough for second place.
The Anzar boys boasted low numbers — just four boys total — and compiled seven points as a result to finish in fourth place out of five teams.
Anzar will now compete against the likes of Carmel, Pacific Grove, King City and Soledad at the MTAL Trials on Tuesday, which will be held at Pacific Grove at 4 p.m.
