Jeff Myers resigned from his post as Gilroy High track and field coach after five years of service this past week.
A GHS alum, Myers coached track for 25 years in all.
“I just can’t be out there all the time anymore,” Myers said. “I’ll still help out with Avis-Kelley (Invitational) and CCS and all of that.”
Myers, the 2010 California Coaches Association Coach of the Year for girls track and field, led the Lady Mustangs to their first Tri-County Athletic League championship in 21 years this past season, capping a five-year run that turned the GHS program from a dismal state to a perennial section contender.
Not only were the girls successful, but the 2010 boys took fourth at the Central Coast Section Championships, the first podium appearance for a boys team since 1982.
Myers loved to see his athletes succeed, celebrating with them in moments of achievement. And he grieved with them in times of defeat.
“He will definitely be hard to replace,” GHS athletic Director Jack Daley said.
Myers is assisting Daley in finding a proper replacement.
Myers also served as the Christopher High School head coach, molding the first-year program this past season. He coined the phrase “Fellowship of Track,” emphasizing the unity between the two schools.
