Although the San Benito Haybalers finished in sixth place overall at the Bill Kearney Invitational on Saturday, and behind league rival Gilroy, junior Jason Roascio made a name for himself when he recorded a pair of first-place finishes in both the 200- and 400-meter events.

Competing at Salinas High School, Roascio first set the stage in the 400 when he clocked a 49.50 and defeated Saratoga’s Trevor Teerlink (50.12) for the top spot. The sub-50 time supplied Roascio with the third fastest recorded time in the Central Coast Section to date, behind only Bellarmine’s Justin Montgomery (49.08) and Andre Chapman (49.03), each of whom set their top-CCS times at the Stanford Invitational.

Roascio’s day at the Kearney Invitational wasn’t complete just yet, though. The San Benito junior then raced in the preliminaries for the 200 meters, and defeated Gilroy’s Julias Travis (22.57) with a 22.25 to advance to the second round.

In the 200-meter finals, Roascio then beat Travis again for first place and shaved more than three-tenths of a second off his preliminary time with a 21.94 — the fastest recorded time in the CCS to date.

In the 200, though, Roascio has the leg up on Bellarmine’s Chapman, who is second in the CCS with a 22.05.

Roascio should see both Chapman and Montgomery in the 200 and 400-meter events at the Top 8 Meet on Saturday in Los Gatos.

Also expected to be in attendance are the boys and girls 4×100 teams, Eddie Guzman (1,600; 3,200), Jose Castillo (1,600; 3,200), Jayjoel Fernandez (110 hurdles), Melisah Cortez (800), Scott Medina (300 hurdles, high jump), David Kret (800), the boys 4×400 relay team, Melissa Castro (high jump), Sophie Coelho (pole vault), Frankie Martinez (shot put, discus) and Enrique Ramos (shot put).

Ramos was sixth on Saturday in the shot put at 45-03.

Meanwhile, Guzman’s 4:26.87 in the 1,600-meter event on Saturday not only placed him sixth overall, but vaulted him into 13th in the CCS, while Kret’s 1:59.59 in the 800 positioned him in fourth place on Saturday and 14th in the CCS.

Other notable events included Jose Castillo’s 9:51.18 in the 3,200, which placed him fourth.

San Benito compiled 30 points at the Bill Kearney Invitational to take sixth place, while the San Benito frosh/soph team was second with 63 points.

The Lady Balers, meanwhile, finished 10th overall with 20 points, but behind league rivals North Salinas (2nd, 51), Notre Dame (3rd, 41) and Alisal (6th,, 28).

San Benito’s Savanna Wilson put together a strong day for the Lady Balers. She took third in the 100-meter preliminaries with a 13.46 and fifth in the finals with a 13.34, and also finished fourth in the long jump with a 15-03 ½.

Melisah Cortez was fifth in the 400 at 62.53.

In the field, Krystal Alnas took seventh in the shot put with a 31-08 ¾, while Sophie Coelho took runner-up in the pole vault with a 10-0.
