Tsunaye Jean Shingai passed away unexpectedly April 21, 2011, at her home in San Juan Bautista, CA.
Jean was born July 7, 1922, in Gilroy, CA. Jean is survived by her husband of 62 years, Yukio Joe Shingai; sons, Robert (Barbara) Shingai, Dan Shingai (Gloria Campodonica), Wayne (Mary Ann) Shingai; daughter, Patti (Larry) Yamada; grandchildren Stephanie Shingai (Jeff Fong), Matthew Shingai, Gregory Yamada, Nicole Yamada, Kelli and Dana Shingai.Growing up in Hayward, CA, Jean was one of six children, born to Umitaro and Kin Futagaki.
During World War II, she was interned in a relocation camp in Topaz, UT. Following the war, she relocated with her family to Salt Lake City, UT. She later relocated to California, where she married Yukio Joe Shingai and lived most of her adult life in San Juan Bautista.
She loved to draw, crochet, garden, and cook. Most of all, she found great pleasure being with family and enjoying her six grandchildren.
She was a member of the Watsonville Buddhist Temple, the Women’s Association, San Benito HowaKai, and San Benito County J.A.C.L.Memorial service will be held on Friday, April 29, 2011, at 2:00 P.M., Gunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home, 870 San Benito Street, Hollister, California.
