The Hollister Vikings played several teams from Oak Grove on Sunday, with two of their three competitive teams winning big on the road.

The Vikings will be at home for four of the next five weeks, with all their games are on Saturdays beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Andy Hardin Stadium.

The Vikings opponents this weekend will be a variety of teams from Oakland and San Jose.

The Hollister Junior Midgets dominated the Oak Grove West Regulators Sunday, scoring on every possession in the first half and leading Oak Grove 28-0 at the break. By Pop Warner sportsmanship rules, when a team goes up by 28 points, a running clock is used and the leading team cannot extend its lead beyond 28 points. Therefore, the final score remained 28-0.

The Regulators went three-and-out on their first possession, and the Viking offense began a 79-yard drive with a 29-yard run by halfback Cody Cameron. The drive also included an 18-yard run by wingback Angel Pasillas and a 32-yard touchdown pass play from quarterback Austin Wahl to tight end Damon Perez. Pasillas converted the point-after to put the Vikings up, 8-0.

Wahl was 4-for-4 passing on the day, completing passes to Perez, fullback Damien Botelho and Pasillas. He also scored two rushing touchdowns, one an 8-yard option keeper and the other a quarterback sneak after fullback Zack Hicks ran 14 yards to the 2-yard line. That touchdown was set up by the defense after Perez recovered a fumble deep in Oak Grove territory.

The Viking offensive line of Tyler Tobia, Luis Aceves, Austin Tobia, Dominic Padilla and Aaron Martinez did a good job of opening up holes for the Viking offense. Wingback Steven Morales, who rushed for 24 yards on four carries, also had nice runs in the game.

Defensively the Vikings were strong and kept any Regulator gains to a minimum. Hicks, who also plays linebacker, had a quarterback sack and several tackles for losses, as did defensive lineman Tyler Tobia. Wahl, who also plays safety, ran back an interception for the final Vikings score late in the first half. Perez had a fumble recovery, and cornerbacks John Canes and Cody Cameron and linebacker Lionel Munguia made several tackles.

Oak Grove Red Dawgs 6

The Vikings Pee Wee football team came into Sunday’s contest against host Oak Grove expecting a hard-fought game that would take four quarters to decide. Instead, Hollister put the game away early and never looked back in a 28-6 drubbing to run its record to 2-0.

Hollister’s defense forced a fumble on Oak Grove’s first play from scrimmage which was recovered by Cody Freitas, and the offense got going quickly when quarterback Tyler Fhurong hit Chris Cook on a 30-yard pass to move the ball to the 13-yard line. Cook followed that with a seven-yard run before Fhurong hit Freitas on a six-yard pass to put the Vikings up 6-0 just 76 seconds into the game.

On Oak Grove’s next possession, Freitas had a six-yard tackle for a loss and Jordan Goldstein delivered a big hit on second down to set up third-and-long. Oak Grove’s pass was well defended by Joshua George and fell incomplete, forcing a punt.

Hollister then embarked on a 69-yard drive with runs by Greg Steinbeck, Brandon Olivares, Cook and a quarterback-keeper from Andrew Breen. Switching offensive alignments frequently, Hollister then got a 24-yard pass from Fhurong to George that set up a 15-yard touchdown run by Cook on a direct snap to put Hollister up 12-0. Fhurong kicked the two-point conversion to make it 14-0.

Oak Grove finally had a legitimate scoring threat late in the first half when they rushed the Vikings punter, sacking him for a loss. The Hollister defense rose to the challenge as Dylan Yamasaki penetrated the Red Dawgs backfield for a nine-yard loss on first down, while Yamasaki and Freitas contained a screen pass on third down.

Oak Grove got a first down via a penalty at the 18, but Cook forced a 10-yard loss and Fhurong broke up a pass play on third down. On fourth down, Cook then intercepted a pass to end the threat, and the Vikings took over at Oak Grove’s 6-yard line with less than 10 seconds left in the half.

Hollister delivered the fatal blow on the next play when Fhurong hit Freitas on a 94-yard touchdown pass as time ran out in the half to put the Vikings up 22-0 after the two-point conversion. Fhurong totaled 154 yards passing and had two touchdown passes in the first half alone.

In the third quarter’s opening drive, Yamasaki had 19 yards on three rushes; Freitas had 17 yards on two carries; and Steinbeck had a three-yard scamper for Hollister’s fourth touchdown of the game, putting the team up 28-0.

Hollister controlled the ball for most of the second half with good runs by Brady Robles, Brandon Olivares and Steinbeck. Hollister’s Wyatt Naccarato, Breen and John Lehr each made several tackles for Hollister in the second half. The Red Dawgs got on the board when an Oak Grove runner broke off a 52-yard touchdown run as the third quarter expired to make the final score 28-6.

The Vikings defense played valiantly but their efforts could not secure a win as the Junior Pee Wees were shut out on offense for the third successive week.

Fans had high hopes early in the game that the offense would get on the board when halfback RJ Clark threw a 38-yard pass to Andrew Sotelo. The crowd cheered with excitement only to have the air sucked out when there appeared to be a flag on the play against the Vikings. After some confusion, the penalty actually was against the Ravens, putting the ball of the Viking’s 15-yard line.

Again, the halfback Clark took a direct snap and found Austin Cascio who was tackled on the 3. But two plays later, Daniel Hopkins’ pass was intercepted by the Rebels, who tried to run it out of the end zone but Jose Rodriguez made a tackle pinning Oak Grove back deep.

On their first play from scrimmage, the Rebel halfback broke a long gain but Vikings safety Shraee Harrison caught up to the runner four yards short of the end zone to make a spectacular tackle. The Vikings defense dug in for a successful defensive stand as Ezzie Lovato and Tommy Ford made a big sack to end the Rebels’ first threat.

Hollister could not move offensively however, and the Rebels got the ball back in good field position. This time, the Rebels were able to move in and score despite some great defensive plays by Andrew Huaracha, Dominic Barrios and Matthew Rabago. Oak Grove then recovered an onside kick, but Hollister held them again as Rodriguez, Barrios, Clay Schwall, Justin Sanders and Sotelo made big plays to smother the Rebels attack.

Again, the Vikings offense could not move and the Rebels regained possession on the Hollister 16. Once again, the Viking defense dug deep to stop the Ravens with key defensive plays by Sotelo, Clark, Huaracha, and Rodriguez.

The game continued that way in the third quarter as the Vikings could not move the ball, but Hollister kept rising up defensively to keep the Rebels out of the end zone.

Finally as the fourth quarter began, Oak Grove scored the touchdown that put them up by 14.

The Vikings got one more offensive spark as Clark passed to Sotelo for a 20-yard gain. Oak Grove stopped the drive, only to fumble the ball into the hands of Nick Trimble, who recovered for the Vikings. But Hollister gave the ball right back on an interception, and a second Rebel pick gave them an insurance touchdown late in the contest.

Oak Grove scored in the final moments of an exciting contest to break a scoreless tie.

Viking fans were thrilled with the team’s defensive performance early in the game as Nathan Fhurong and Diego Quintero broke through the Raptors line to force a big backfield loss. Oak Grove tried a reverse play but Darius Parks and Andres Soto smelled it out and stuffed it for another big loss. The Raptors first possession ended with Quintero pouncing on a fumble to get the ball for the Vikings.

Unfortunately, the Hollister offense fumbled it right back. But the defense rose up again as Fhurong, Nick Perez and Hunter Nye made big tackles on sweeps when the Raptors tried the outside running game. Finally, they broke a long gain, but Joey DiMaggio made a touchdown-saving tackle. With Oak Grove close to their goal line, the Vikings defense came up big as Tristan Wahl and Nye made big tackles. On third-and-goal, the Raptors tried to pass, but intense pressure from Nick Perez forced an errant throw. On fourth down, Oak Grove went back to the outside run, but Fhurong made an open-field tackle to get the ball back for the Vikings.

The Vikings offense finally got into gear as Andres Soto made several good runs, but the first half expired before they could march the length of the field.

The second half began with another Hollister fumble recovery, this one by Wahl, and the offense started moving behind the blocking of Wahl, Matthew Delatorre, Christopher Pritchett, Jonathan Preciado and Anthony Espinoza. But after Nye had run for couple first downs, the Raptors defense suddenly stiffened.

Oak Grove got the ball back, but the Viking defense threw them in reverse as Quintero, Nye and Fhurong took turns making backfield tackles for big losses. This time, it was the Raptors turn to defend their goal, but they passed the test and the game remained a scoreless tie.

Finally late in the game, Oak Grove had several strong runs to get a first down on the Vikings 30. Bobby Vivian, Mike Casarez and Parks made several tackles to slow the drive, but the Raptors got a big break when a Hollister penalty game them a first-and-goal at the 5-yard line.

The Vikings defense fought valiantly to keep them out of the end zone on three successive plays as Soto, Wahl and Perez all made game-saving tackles. But on fourth-and-one, the Raptors found the end zone to score the winning touchdown.

Hollister had less than a minute left to try to move the length of the field. Nathan Fhurong passed to Wahl but Oak Grove made the tackle to end an exciting game.
