A 26-year-old Hollister man was the driver in an accident Saturday that killed two Oakland residents on Highway 101 near Aromas.
Sergio Zendejas of Hollister was northbound in a pick-up truck that lost control and struck a semi-tractor trailer before rolling over and hitting the car carrying the two fatal victims.
Zendejas sustained moderate injuries and was airlifted to Regional Medical Center of San Jose. The driver of the 1997 Honda Accord, 51-year-old Daniel O’Neill, died instantly, according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol.
The passenger, 52-year-old Carrie Lynn Oakeshott, was airlifted to the same San Jose hospital but died a short time later, according to the CHP.
Two other involved drivers were uninjured, according to the CHP. They included 35-year-old Inderjit Kang of Fresno, driving a 2002 Kenworth tractor-trailer, and 51-year-old Cary Crain of Orefield, Pa., driving a 2005 Chevrolet Corvette.
The CHP in its narrative on the accident noted that it occurred at 11:19 a.m. Saturday south of Dunbarton Road.
After Zendejas lost control of his 2002 Ford F150 truck for unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and sideswiped the tractor trailer, continuing across the southbound lanes. The truck then rolled over the top of the Corvette and struck the Honda head-on, according to the CHP.
The accident remains under investigation, while there won’t be any potential action taken against the driver until the probe is done, a spokesman for the Monterey CHP unit noted.
One of the southbound lanes was closed to traffic for two and a half hours for investigation, cleanup and road repairs, according to the CHP.
