Authorities Friday discovered two truckloads of illegal fireworks while responding to a complaint of mortars being shot off at the home, according to police.

Officers found the fireworks – with an undetermined value – around 11:30 p.m. on Friday in pickup trucks of people at the residence on the 1200 block of Monica Court.

“We made contact with the party, and it was in clear view,” said Hollister Code Enforcement Officer Mike Chambless, referring to the stock of fireworks.

The collection was made up of mortars, firecrackers, Roman candles and other assorted illegal fireworks. One of the bigger finds was a 16,000-firecracker roll.

Compared with previous years, Chambless said this year’s find as a whole was more than had been confiscated in the past. Authorities available today did not have precise figures on the confiscated fireworks over the weekend.

As for the cost of the entire stash, Chambless wasn’t sure because some of the fireworks were without price tags. However, the price of fireworks with price tags totaled $5,000.

“Some of the stuff had price tags – totaling $5000 – and that was a small portion of it.”

The case has been forwarded to the San Benito County District Attorney’s Office.
