Bakersfield – Vacaville and Justin Danz each notched firsts over the weekend at the CIF State Wrestling Championships at Rabobank Arena.

The Bulldogs won their first team title and Danz, a 171-pound senior from Ponderosa, won his first individual title while denying Louis Bland of Modesto Central Catholic his quest for a third championship.

Vacaville’s 124 points were eight ahead of Poway, which finished second for the second straight year. Defending champion Buchanan was third with 113 points. Five-time Central Coast Section champion Gilroy was eighth with 63 points, getting third-place finishes from Jesse Delgado (103) and Hunter Collins (171), and a seventh from Martin Gonzalez (119). Fremont-Sunnyvale’s Boris Novachkov was the only CCS individual titlist, winning at 125.

Gilberto Camacho, 103, and Jason Welch, 160, were the only wrestlers to complete unbeaten seasons, each finishing 50-0. Calvary Chapel’s Jason Lara won the outstanding wrestler award when he upset defending champion and No. 1 seed Nikko Triggas 11-5 in the 119-pound final.
