Juan Carlos Vega scores three goals, leads Anzar to 3-0 win
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA
Anzar’s Juan Carlos Vega continues to make a name for himself in just his first year of high school. The freshman forward scored three more goals Tuesday and led the Hawks’ boys soccer team to a 3-0 victory against visiting Marina.
The shutout win improves Anzar to 5-1 in the Coastal Athletic League, 5-2 overall, and is a strong rebound victory after the Hawks lost their first league game of the season, a 3-2 defeat against York.
Led by Vega, who has 13 goals this season and sits just one goal behind league leader Chris Chan-Kai of Pacific Collegiate, the Hawks piled shot after shot on Marina – 19 in all.
Vega scored unassisted in the 19th minute and again in the 25th minute off an assist from Alexis Sicairos to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Teammate Danny Ramos then set up Vega in the 70th minute for the hat trick and the comfortable lead.
Marina falls to 0-6-1 in the CAL with the loss.
The Hawks’ schedule gets far more difficult from here on out, however. Anzar will visit Chan-Kai and Pacific Collegiate on Thursday in Santa Cruz, then play back-to-back games next week against Pacific Grove.
Anzar’s home match against Pacific Grove was postponed a second time last Saturday, and the two teams will meet up early next week in order to make up the contest.
Anzar will host Pacific Grove on Monday and travel to Pacific Grove on Tuesday. The Hawks will then finish up their regular season on Thursday, Feb. 12 in San Juan Bautista against York.
With Anzar currently holding down first place at 5-1, Pacific Collegiate (4-1-2), Pacific Grove (4-1-1) and York (3-2-1) all remain in close contention.
