SANTA CRUZ
Katherine Breger supplied six kills and four blocks, Ryan Asp added a team-high nine kills, and the San Benito girls volleyball team picked up its first non-tournament victory on Tuesday in Santa Cruz when it swept past host Harbor in three games (25-19, 25-23, 25-11).
Baler Jessica Steigelman added six kills for San Benito, which improves to 3-3 overall on the early season.
The Balers went 2-3 last weekend in Milpitas at Spikefest I. Head coach Dean Askanas wasn’t pleased with his team’s performance at the elite tournament, feeling there were too many errors committed.
“We’re learning to play within our means, learning to play under control,” Askanas said. “We spent a lot of time on that Monday (at practice) and they looked much better today.”
The Balers will host their home opener on Thursday night at Mattson Gym. The team will welcome Homestead to Hollister for a 5:30 p.m. match.
Last season, playing in a similar schedule, the Balers followed a 3-0 victory against Harbor at home with a four-game loss to Homestead in Cupertino.
