After compiling a 12-4 record in the Tri-County Athletic League, 14-11 overall, the San Benito boys’ volleyball team fell short of advancing to the Central Coast Section Division I Championships on Saturday when the tournament seeds were announced.

The Balers, who finished in third place in the TCAL and outside of a top-two automatic berth, were in need of an at-large bid to further extend their season.

TCAL champion Monterey and runner-up Gilroy managed to advance to the postseason with automatic berths. Monterey (25-7), competing in Division II, earned the No. 3 seed and will open against No. 6 San Lorenzo Valley, while No. 7 Gilroy (20-10), competing in Division I, will open the CCS tournament against No. 10 Lynbrook.

San Benito’s four losses in the TCAL came against both Monterey and Gilroy — two losses each — but the Balers did manage to go 12-0 against the remaining nine teams in the league.

Under first-year head coach Erica Richardson this season, San Benito battled the likes of Harker, San Lorenzo Valley and Mount Madonna in non-conference action — each of whom advanced to the postseason this year.

Richardson was not available for comment at press time.

Last season, after winning the TCAL outright, the Balers advanced to the postseason for the first time in eight years, but fell in the quarterfinals to Homestead as the No. 5 seed.
